Rio Hostels – Copacabana Beach
Of the beaches that make Brazil, and Brazilians famous all around the world for their bronzed skin and beautiful people, Copacabana is the most famous. Indeed, Copacabana Beach is one of the most famous beaches in the whole world. It’s the location of the legendary Carnaval parties, the best place in the world (according to anyone who has seen them) to watch New Year’s fireworks, and one of the most popular tourist attractions.
This huge beach, flanked on one side by the endless blue ocean and on the other by Avenida Atlantica, which features those famous Portuguese styled black and white tiled waves, is always full of life. You can rent bikes and ride along it with the sea breeze blowing in your face, eat at any number of restaurants, from little seaside shacks to chic, expensive restaurants, have a classic Brazilian caipirinha, or just walk along the beach, past its hundreds of kiosks, bars, open-air restaurants, hotels, lifeguard posts, and the two historical lighthouses at either end.
If you plan to go to the beach to soak up that famous, bronzing Brazilian sun, don’t forget to follow the local Brazilians advice for turning brown instead of red- lie out in the sun after 5pm. The beach remains warm and sunny, and those damaging UV rays will be less harsh, so you tan instead of burning.
Tijuca Forest in Rio
Tijuca Forest is the world’s largest urban forest, covering 32 square kilometers, or almost 20 square miles. It is a tropical rainforest, right in the middle of the city. Many of the plants and animals there are only found in the Atlantic rainforest, and find this to one of the few places they can live peacefully, as many are endangered. The park has been a protected National Park for fifty years, and was originally created in the 1850s to protect the water supply for Rio.
One of the New Seven Wonders of the World, Christ the Redeemer, sits in Tijuca Forest above the Corcovado Mountain. Along with the impressive statue, visible from all over Rio, there is also viewing station at the foot of the statue which provides a truly spectacular view if you go on a sunny day. From here, you can see all of downtown Rio de Janeiro, Sugarloaf Mountain, the Rodrigo de Freitas Lake, Cobacabana and Ipanema beaches, Maracanã Stadium, and the outlying shanty towns of Rio. Smog and fog can often obscure this amazing view, so try to go on a clear day.
Speaking of Sugarloaf…One of the safest cable cars in the world (built in 1912, rebuilt in the 70s, and never had an accident with casualties) leaves every 20 minutes with 75 people in its glass panned with walls to go to its peak. It starts at the base of the Babylon Mountain, stops off at Urca’s Mountain, and then arrives at the top of Sugarloaf. Perched at the edge of the sea, with a dazzling view of the ocean, Sugarloaf and its neighbors are all made from granite and quartz.
Other attractions within the Tijuca Forest in clued the Cascatinha Waterfall, the giant granite picnic table called the Emperor’s Table, the Mayrink Chapel with Portinari murals, the Chinese Vista lookout spot, under a pagoda-styled gazebo, and the zoo, which houses 2000 species.
To get to Tijuca from Copacabana, take the subway line from Cantagalo in Copacabana (the beginning of the line) to Saens Peña in Tijuca (end of the line).
